작가 노트 #4

청매, 한지에 수묵담채, 150×300㎝, 2012

‘매화는 평생 향기를 팔지 않는다(梅一生寒不賣香, 매일생한불매향)’는 말이 온종일 생각의 꼬리를 문다. 어찌 보면 하나의 식물일 뿐인데, 자신을 매화와 동일시한 옛 분들의 높은 뜻이 가슴에 사무친다. 고난이 닥쳐와도 죽음을 무릅쓰고 자신의 의지를 지킨다는 이 말은 매화의 겉모습만 그려내는 나에게 서릿발같은 경계로 다가선다.

All day long, I have been arrested by the phrase ‘Maeilsaenghanbulmaehyang'(梅一生寒不賣香, the plum flower never sells its fragrance throughtout its life). My heart is deeply pierced by my ancestor’s noble heart identifying the plum blossoms, which is merely a plant with himself. This word, professing the firm resolution to keep his well even in suffering and at the risk of death, issues a stern warning to me against painting only the outward appearance of the plum blossoms.
