작가 노트 #5

홍청매, 한지에 수묵담채, 283×552㎝, 2012

우리를 감싸는 시련처럼 어둑한 안개 같고,
넘을 수 없는 장애물처럼 바위 같기도 한 배경은
어두운 밤하늘을 지켜주는 별빛 같기도 하며 적막하고 스산한 겨울,
깊은 산의 중첩된 이미지로 보이기도 한다.

만개한 매화가 아닌 갓 피어난 희소성 있는 봉오리들은 고결한 숭고미를 보여주며
고난을 이겨낸 불굴의 의지를 격하게 뒤틀린 가지의 기세에 담아
마치 칼 끝 같은 이미지를 주기도 하지만 전체에서 느껴지는 감성은 포근함을 잃지 않는다.

나는 매화의 정신, 혼을 그린다.

The background echoes the way that hardships consume us.
It resembles the dark shadows of a fog that drown us,
or the unconquerable obstacles that stand in our way like a great boulder.
An overlap of the bright lights that glisten the night sky,
of the chilly stillness of winter and the deepest stretches of
the mountains can also be perceived.

The rarity of afresh plum blossom buds,
rather than full blooms, expresses noble and sublime beauty;
the fiercely twisted branches encapsulates the indomitable will
to overcome hardships. All the while, the overall sense of warmth remains.

I paint the philosophy and the spirit of plum blossoms.
