작가 노트 #3

탐매(探梅), 모시에 수묵담채, 모시 60장 가변 설치, 2012

여러 해 섬진강 언저리를 맴돌며 매화를 그렸지만, 옛 분들이 말씀하신 기품 있는 매화를 만나는 것은 쉽지 않았다. 산을 오르내리며 구석구석을 뒤지다가 문득 매화가 사람과 같다는 생각을 하였다. 이제서야 매화뿐만 아니라 덕을 지닌 아름다운 사람을 만나는 것도, 이처럼 어렵고 귀한 일이라는 생각을 하게 된다.

매화 길 들어서니 매화는 간 곳 없고
옷섶에 가슴 속에 향기로만 남아 있네.

I have painted plum blossoms for several years, wandering around the Seomjin River basin, but it has not been easy to find a bloom containing the dignity of the plum blossom described by Korea’s ancestors. Climbing and descending mountains and searching every nook and cranny, I came th think that the plum blossom is like a man, Then I realized that it is as difficult and precious to find a beautiful man of virtue as it is to find a plum blossom.

Though it is the path of the plum blossom, there is no plum blossom
with only its fragrance left on the gusset and in my heart.
